About the day
Kuwait's National Day on 25 February celebrates the country's independence in 1961, honouring Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, who led the country to full independence. Liberation Day on 26 February marks the end of seven months of Iraqi occupation in 1991.
Both days are official holidays, with work suspended in state and public institutions. The celebrations also honour those who contributed to Kuwait's liberation from the 1990 Iraqi invasion.
In 2026 Kuwait marked the 65th anniversary of National Day and the 35th anniversary of Liberation Day. HH the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah raised the national flag at Bayan Palace on 1 February 2026 to open the national celebrations.
