About the day
Victoria Day became a legal holiday in 1901 after the death of Queen Victoria, and a 1952 change fixed it to the Monday before 25 May. It marked Queen Elizabeth II's birthday from 1957, and a 2023 proclamation extended it to all future monarchs. It is a federal general holiday and is observed in most provinces and territories.
