About the day
The day was chosen by iwi in 2016 because 28 October is the anniversary of He Whakaputanga, the 1835 Declaration of Independence. It was first observed in 2018. A different iwi hosts the national observance each year, with Crown funding through Te Puni Kōkiri, and hosts may hold it on another date of local significance.
