About the day
Sukkot starts five days after Yom Kippur. Families build a sukkah, a temporary shelter with a leafy roof, and eat meals in it to recall the Israelites' journey through the desert. It is followed straight away by Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. Jewish festivals begin at sunset the evening before the first date shown.
