About the day
Sourdough September runs for the whole of September. It is run by the Real Bread Campaign, a project of the food and farming charity Sustain, and was launched in 2013.
The campaign encourages people to bake genuine sourdough and buy it from small independent bakeries. It also raises awareness of "sourfaux", products sold as sourdough that are made with baker's yeast, acidifiers or other additives. Bakeries, baking schools and mills run classes, tastings and events.
The month suits independent bakeries, flour millers, cookery schools, delis, food retailers and kitchenware brands.
