About the day
Restart a Heart Day is held on 16 October to raise awareness of cardiac arrest and to encourage bystanders to start CPR. In Ireland the Irish Heart Foundation promotes the day, and in 2018 it worked with the HSE National Ambulance Service on free CPR sessions.
The Irish Heart Foundation's message on the day in 2024 was that people should not hesitate to start CPR, because you can do no harm by trying. It said almost 70% of cardiac arrests happen at home.
The Foundation runs public CPR courses through affiliated training sites and the free CPR 4 Schools programme for post-primary students.
