About the day
Hag Al Laila, meaning "for this night", is held on the night of mid-Sha'ban, about 15 days before Ramadan. Children dress in traditional clothes, carry colourful woven bags and go door to door singing, and neighbours give them nuts and sweets.
It usually begins after maghrib prayers. In 2026 the night began at sunset on Monday 2 February.
The UAE Council for Fatwa has said celebrating the night is permissible as a social custom, and that exchanging gifts to bring joy to children, relatives and neighbours strengthens family and social ties.
