About the day
Garangao is a Ramadan tradition across the Gulf that falls on the 14th night of Ramadan. In Qatar it marks the midway point of the month and rewards children for fasting through the first half.
Children dress in traditional clothing, carry colourful cloth bags and go door to door singing the Garangao song. Households give them handfuls of nuts and sweets.
In 2026, venues across Doha, including Old Doha Port, Msheireb Downtown Doha and Qatar National Library, held events on 3 and 4 March. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin on 8 February 2027, which would place Garangao around 21 February, subject to moon sighting.
