About the day
Eid al-Adha honours the Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son. Families attend prayers, share a meal and give meat or money to people in need. Its date is tied to the Day of Arafah during Hajj. Islamic dates depend on the sighting or calculation of the new moon, so they may shift by a day and can differ between communities. Dates shown follow the Fiqh Council of North America's published calendar; check with local mosques nearer the time.
Eid al-Adha, and the Day of Arafah before it, are public holidays in all six Gulf states. Saudi Arabia hosts the Hajj pilgrimage, which reaches its peak on the Day of Arafah.
