About the day
Canterbury's historic anniversary is 16 December, but Christchurch and much of Canterbury take the holiday as Show Day, the Friday of the New Zealand Agricultural Show in November. Provincial anniversary days are regional public holidays, and the observed day is set by local councils based on local custom, so it often differs from the historic date.
