About the day
Australia Day is a national public holiday in Australia, with citizenship ceremonies and the Australian of the Year awards. The National Australia Day Council describes it as a day to reflect on the nation's history and celebrate its people. The date is also a day of mourning for many First Nations people, so tone matters.
