About the day
Makar Sankranti celebrates the start of longer days and the winter harvest. In Gujarat it is marked by kite flying, and related festivals include Pongal in Tamil Nadu. Unlike most Hindu festivals it follows the solar calendar, so it almost always falls on 14 January.
