About the day
Isra and Mi'raj commemorates the Prophet Muhammad's overnight journey from Makkah to Jerusalem (Isra) and his ascent through the heavens (Mi'raj). It falls on 27 Rajab, the seventh month of the Islamic calendar.
It is a public holiday in Oman and Kuwait. In 2026 it fell on 16 January, and Oman gave the holiday on Sunday 18 January. It has not been a paid public holiday in the UAE since 2019, when public and private sector holidays were unified.
Because the Islamic year is shorter than the Gregorian year, it is expected to fall twice in 2027, around 5 January and again around 25 December. Both dates are estimates and depend on the sighting of the Rajab moon.
