About the day
Arab Environment Day falls on 14 October each year and was declared by the League of Arab States. Each year has a theme, and the 2024 theme was "Land Restoration for Enhanced Resilience".
The Arab League says 90 percent of land in Arab countries is classed as dry or extremely dry, which leaves it highly vulnerable to desertification. It has warned that depleting natural resources and degrading land put food security and regional stability at risk.
Gulf states mark the day with national programmes. In 2024 Oman's Environment Authority highlighted its drive to plant 10 million wild trees and its work to map and reduce land degradation.
