About the day
Gulf Diabetes Week runs from 8 to 14 November each year, ending on World Diabetes Day. It is one of the unified health awareness weeks of the Gulf Health Council, held in the same week across the Gulf states.
Health ministries use the week to encourage screening, healthy eating and regular activity. Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Health lists it in its calendar of health days every year.
Diabetes is a major health issue in the region. A 2018 Gulf News report, citing International Diabetes Federation figures, put adult diabetes rates at about 24% in Saudi Arabia and 19% in the UAE.
