About the day

Stir-up Sunday is the last Sunday before Advent. Its name comes from the opening words of the collect for that day in the Book of Common Prayer of 1549: 'Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people'.

Over time the day became linked with making the Christmas pudding. Traditionally each member of the household takes a turn to stir the mixture from east to west and make a wish, and some families add a silver coin for luck.
